What a wheel bet actually is
A wheel is not a separate bet type. It is a way of filling in an exotic — an exacta, a trifecta, a superfecta — when you are confident about one position and not about the others. You key a horse into the position you believe in and take every runner in the remaining positions. An exacta wheel with the four horse on top is the four with everything: four over one, four over two, four over three, and so on down the field.
The cost follows from that directly. You are buying one ticket for every combination the wheel creates, so a full exacta wheel in a nine-horse field is eight combinations, and at a two-dollar base that is a sixteen-dollar ticket. Move to a trifecta and the same logic multiplies twice: eight second-place options times seven third-place options. The wheel has not changed; the field size has.
Part-wheels, and why most players use them
A full wheel pays you for being right about one horse and buys you every longshot underneath it, including the ones you had already dismissed. A part-wheel keys the same horse but lists only the runners you actually rate underneath. It is the same structure with the dead combinations taken out, and it is the version most players end up using, because the combinations you deleted are the ones that were costing you money without ever being live.
Read the cost before you confirm. Every book shows the combination count and the total next to the ticket, and that total is the honest price of the opinion you are backing. If the number looks larger than the opinion is worth, the answer is usually a shorter part-wheel rather than a smaller base.
