How a released bonus works
The bonus sits in a pending pot and is released into your cash balance in increments as you generate rake — typically a fixed amount of bonus per unit of rake, in chunks, with an expiry date on the whole thing. Three numbers decide whether you will ever see all of it:
- the release rate — how much rake buys how much bonus;
- the chunk size — a bonus released in $5 pieces reaches you far sooner than one released in $50 pieces;
- the expiry — the unreleased remainder is lost, and at most rooms it is lost silently.
How rakeback works
Rakeback is a percentage of the rake you personally generated, paid back on a schedule. It has no expiry and no pending pot: it starts small and it never stops. A room may express it as a plain percentage or dress it as a tiered loyalty scheme where the effective percentage rises with volume — which is the same thing with a ladder attached.
Which is worth more depends on one thing
A released bonus rewards a burst of volume. Rakeback rewards the habit.

The clause that decides it
Read whether the two stack. At many rooms taking the welcome bonus suspends rakeback until the bonus is fully released or expired — which turns the choice into a genuine either/or rather than a bonus on top. Where they do stack, the bonus is nearly always the right first move, because the rakeback keeps running underneath it.
Every poker promotion is denominated in rake generated. Estimating your monthly rake at your stake and volume is the single calculation that makes all of these offers comparable.
What does not change between them
Neither offer improves the games, and the games are what decide the outcome. What happens to the unreleased part of a bonus?
It expires and is removed. There is rarely a notification, which is why the expiry date is the number to write down on day one.
Is a 100% poker bonus comparable to a 100% casino bonus?
No. The casino version is credited and carries wagering; the poker version is released against rake and carries none. They are different products with the same headline.
