What RTP is actually telling you
Treat RTP as a price. A 96 per cent slot costs four cents per dollar wagered; a 94 per cent slot costs six. On $6,000 of turnover — a realistic bonus target, as rollover math shows — that difference is $120. It is real money, it is knowable in advance, and it is the one thing about a slot you can compare objectively.
Many studios licence a slot in multiple configurations and the operator picks one. The figure in the game’s info panel is the one that applies to you, not the figure in a review written about a different casino.
What volatility is telling you
Volatility is the shape of the distribution around that average. A low-volatility slot pays small and often; a high-volatility slot pays almost nothing for long stretches and occasionally pays a great deal. Both can have identical RTP. The difference between them is entirely about how long your balance lasts and how wide the swings are.

Putting them together
The practical rule falls out of the table. If your goal is to survive a turnover target — a bonus, a promotion, a rainy evening — you want high RTP and low volatility, because you are trying to minimise cost per spin and maximise the number of spins. If your goal is a large single result and you accept losing the stake quickly, high volatility is the only thing that can produce it, and RTP barely enters the decision.
Hit frequency is the third number
Some games publish it: the share of spins that return anything at all. It is a more honest proxy for how a session feels than a marketing label of “medium-high”, and where it is published it is worth more than the label.
What none of this changes
No configuration of RTP or volatility makes a slot profitable in expectation, and no pattern of play alters either number. What they do is let you pick the game that matches what you are trying to do with the session, and price it honestly beforehand.
