What counts as a bet
This is where accidents happen. The cap applies to the total stake of a spin, not to the line bet, and several things people do not think of as a stake are treated as one:
- a bonus buy or feature buy, where the cost of the feature is the stake;
- a double-up or gamble round after a win;
- a doubled or split hand in blackjack, counted as one larger wager;
- an autoplay session that was set up before the bonus was credited and kept its stake.
The cap is rarely enforced by the game client. The stake goes through, you keep playing, and the breach is found when you request a payout — at which point the bonus and its winnings are removed.
How to stay under it without thinking about it
- Find the number in the terms before the first spin, not after.
- Set the stake to comfortably below it, not exactly at it — a currency conversion can put you over the line by a cent.
- Turn off autoplay while a bonus is live, or reset its stake.
- Do not buy features while a bonus is unmet.
- If the balance is mixed, assume the bonus is still active until the cashier says the requirement is met.
Why the clause exists
A large stake on a high-volatility slot converts a bonus into a lottery ticket: a handful of spins either busts or clears the entire requirement in one hit. The cap forces the turnover to happen in small units, which is where the house edge does its work. That is also why the cap sits alongside the weighting table rather than apart from it — see game weighting.
How this changes which offer you take
Two offers with the same multiplier are not equal if one caps stakes at $5 and the other at $10: the second halves the number of spins you need. Put the cap next to the turnover target and the expiry window and the ranking of offers often reverses — the method is in rollover math.
